The Red Hat Society was founded in California and began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve and humour. The founding member, Sue Ellen bought a bright red fedora at a thrift shop, simply because she thought it was quite dashing. Some years later she read the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, which begins "When I am an old women I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles....... Sue decided to give her dear friend Linda Murphy the vintage red hat she had bought and a copy of the poem. Linda was delighted and word soon got around. The rest is history.
The Brighton Belles intend to enjoy life at every opportunity. We intend to
embrace the twilight years and not to dread them. By joining together as sisters
we can do and be whatever we want. We won't be afraid to be ourselves. We
can feel safe in the
company of a group of fun loving women who love to
have fun and dress up.

We go on outings/events to the Theatre, Meals out anywhere we fancy, Afternoon
Tea,Trips up to London, Join other chapters (when invited) to their events. Anything we fancy doing really.
We can go to as many or as few events as we fancy. If we feel blue, we know we can email or phone any of our sisters around the world for a friendly chat. When we are out as a group in our "attire" we get noticed. We get spoken to. Many people want to know what we are all about. Why the red hat? What's it all about? Can we join? We have such fun that we can't wait for the next event.
And when people stop us in the street and quote that OLD saying about "red hat
no drawers" we just tell them "It's for us to know and you to guess". |
